ISANS Tailored Worshops:

12/1/2022

  1. Equity Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) 101 - This 3-hour workshop offers participants an introduction to the concepts of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), and how these ideas relate to newcomers to our Province.
  2. The Newcomer Experience - On Sesame Street, they sang “Who are the people in your neighbouhood?”  This 3-hour workshop offers participants an inside look at newcomers living in our neighbourhoods in Nova Scotia, the challenges that they have faced getting here, and further, the challenges that they still face after arrival.
  3. Micro-aggressions: they’re not small - This 3-hour workshop offers participants the opportunity to understand the seldom- discussed concept of micro-aggressions within the larger, lived realities of racism.  Micro-aggressions are extremely damaging to all racialized people, including racialized newcomers to Nova Scotia.  As the workshop progresses, participants will further learn concepts such as gas-lighting, and what to do when witnessing micro-aggressions.
  4. Power & (White) Privilege - This intense 3-hour workshop offers participants the opportunity to understand concepts such as power, privilege, White privilege, White fragility, and allyship.
  5. Unconscious & Implicit Bias - This 3-hour workshop offers participants the opportunity to understand the concepts of bias, unconscious bias, and implicit bias, and how these relate to newcomers to our Province.
  6. Anti-Islamophobia --This 3-hour workshop explores how Islamophobia impacts our community, beginning with an overview of the term Islamophobia, we will explore some the major tenets of the religion, and in addition, dispel common myths about Islam, and Muslims. The workshop will examine how Muslims, especially newcomers, are impacted by the negative public discourses about their faith.  The workshop will provide opportunities for discussion, thereby creating space for greater understanding which will support efforts to promote a peaceful co-existence through equity, diversity, and inclusion and helping to build safe, caring, and respectful communities for all to live, learn, work and play.
  7. Newcomers & Recreation - This general 3- hour workshop offers those involved in the Recreation sector, an opportunity to understand the specific challenges facing newcomers.  This workshop also tenders “solutions” to existing problems thereby allowing people to provide services more effectively to newcomers
  8. BE-longing (currently in development) – what does it mean to BE-long?  Why is BE-longing so important in conversations pertaining to Equity, Diversity & Inclusion?  This 2- hour workshop deconstructs and finds meaning in these “two little words”.
